Delaware Academy for School Leadership

NEWARK, DE (January 15, 2020) – The Delaware Academy for School Leadership (DASL) at the University of Delaware will host the Women Leading Delaware Education Conference at Dover Downs Conference Center on Tuesday, January 28, 2020.

Women Leading Delaware Education is a networking and professional learning event for all leaders in P-12 and higher education settings. The event was created to address issues specific to women and education leadership, as well as to provide a powerful opportunity for current and aspiring leaders to convene for an impactful day of connection, introspection and inspiration.

A recent AASA survey found that women are leading only 25% of the nation’s public school districts; yet a 2016 US DOE survey found that 77% of teachers are female. Research indicates that it is more challenging for women to be promoted in their careers than men, for a variety of reasons.

A featured general session will highlight the benefits of utilizing a coach to leverage your leadership growth opportunities. Keynote Speaker Jane Kise, Ed.D., is internationally known for her work in executive coaching and her recent publications include: Differentiated Coaching, Holistic Leadership: Thriving Schools, and Step In, Step Up: Empowering Women for the School Leadership Journey. Dr. Kise says, in business, when you’re given a coach, you know you’re on your way to the top – and this is a model for how we can and should support aspiring education leaders, too!

A second general session at the event will feature a panel of Women’s Executive Leadership Coaches:

  • Lillian Lowery, Vice President of Student and Teacher Assessments at Educational Testing Service (ETS) and former Delaware Secretary of Education
  • Margaret Grogan, Dean and Professor, Attallah College of Educational Studies, Chapman University (Keynote Speaker at first annual Women Leadership Conference)
  • Jill Baker,  Deputy Superintendent of Schools, Long Beach Unified School District

Each coach has been working with 2 coachees from Delaware schools in a virtual coaching model since July 2019, and at the conference, they will collectively share lessons learned, how coaching helped them to make strategic career decisions, and advice to conference attendees.

Individuals of all genders and backgrounds are encouraged to participate in this event to become knowledgeable about the conditions for leadership promotion nationally and in Delaware. The Women Leading Delaware Education conference is an opportunity for men and women to openly share their perspectives on these issues and to collaborate on solutions that will one day create more equitable gender representation at all levels of education leadership.
