April 2015 Letter from the Director

Dear Educators,

We have made it through a very cold winter with school delays, closings, and the rescheduling of training sessions and meetings due to cancellations. Finally, spring has arrived and with it comes the anticipation of longer and warmer days. It is also a busy time in schools and at DASL. During this time of the year we are finalizing work with districts and schools and planning for summer training requests. We are in the final planning phase for the 13th Annual Policy and Practice Institute. We have been collaborating for months with the Delaware Association for School Administrators to plan a conference that will be of interest to all school leaders. I hope you enjoy the article that provides more detail regarding guest speakers, topics for break-out sessions, and the change in location. This year we will be able to accommodate more people and offer a variety of sessions.

I am sometimes overwhelmed by the knowledge and experience of DASL staff. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work with these dedicated school leaders who are coaching principals in an effort to improve their ability to use the DPAS II for Teachers and Specialists system. This month we are highlighting three of our Development CoachesEd Burton, Sue Dutton, and Connie Fisher. I think you will agree that the principals assigned to these coaches are fortunate to have such dedicated and experienced individuals supporting them with this work.

As DASL staff work in schools or teach classes at the university, we find ourselves inspired by the educators who work tirelessly to improve instruction and school culture on behalf of the children they serve. I think you will agree that Dr. Deirdra Aikens, principal at Leasure Elementary School in the Christina School District, is an exceptional principal who is doing great work with her teachers and students. If you’re interested in learning about the Data Wise Project from Harvard University then you will enjoy reading the article about how Dr. Aikens uses this model to improve instruction for her students.

In closing, I would like to thank you for your on-going support of the Delaware Academy for School Leadership. We enjoy working with you and look forward to seeing you on June 24th at the 13th Annual Policy and Practice Institute. I hope you have a productive spring and great end of the school year.

In Partnership,

Jackie O. Wilson, Ed.D.
