Delaware Academy for School Leadership
PDCE is pleased to support schoolwide implementation of Bookworms, an open-access reading curriculum for kindergarten through grade 5. Bookworms was originally authored by University of Delaware’s Sharon Walpole, Professor in the School of Education, and the late Michael C. McKenna, University of Virginia’s Thomas G. Jewell Professor of Reading. Sharon Walpole continues to refine the work thanks to a charitable contribution from the nonprofit Open Up Resources.
What’s special about Bookworms is its simplicity. Bookworms uses real books – lots of them. There are no skills sheets or excerpts. The lessons are available for free download at Bookwormsreading.org
The plans incorporate evidence about literacy development, literacy instruction, and literacy assessment. The books themselves are inexpensive. Researchers in UD’s School of Education are studying the impact of Bookworms on student achievement. Initial successes are fueling wide interest, so PDCE is geared up for support.
PDCE is a one-stop shop for ongoing Bookworms professional learning. First we provide training in districts and schools so teachers can start strong. Next we provide coaching for teachers, instructional coaches, and district and school leaders as they refine their understanding. This combination of training and then coaching is a powerful system for building both teacher confidence and student achievement.
